My Current Summer Jams

My Current Summer Jams

August 2, 2018 by Tanya // 4 Comments

I’ve always loved listening to music and it’s always been one of my big regrets that I’m not naturally musically talented. I don’t have a great voice and while I play the piano okay (well, I could at one time), I’m not someone who can sit down and start riffing. I need music to follow. Basically I’m Emmet from the Lego Movie and need to follow instructions. I feel the music but I cannot make it. Sniff. Sniff.

I also used to (errr … possibly still do) feel somewhat awkward about the music I like. It feels like there is a lot of judgment around who you listen to and who will roll with you after hearing that you maybe (do) have a song by a former One Directioner on heavy rotation.

In my defense, it’s from the hot one.

What I’m Jamming to this Summer

Seriously, I have no rhyme or reason to what I listen to at anytime. I typically lean towards pop music but then I get an urge for old school rap or something sweet or a little sexy or something loud to rage over. This is my list (as of today, it will be different tomorrow … probably) in no particular order.

Sangria Wine by Pharrel and Camila Cabello

I am ridiculously in love with this song and hit repeat over and over. They don’t have an official music video yet but this probably my favorite song of the summer.

Make Me Feel by Janelle Monae

I’ve previously shared my deep love for this song but it bears repeating.

Let Me by Zayn

I am not embarrassed. I am not embarrassed. This is a good song. Maybe a slightly (real) lame video. Some people are better singers than actors. Sorry Zayn. You still hot.

Perfect by Ed Sheeran

He might be the whitest, white dude around but I can’t help it: I love this song. If someone sang it to me, I’d melt.

All of Me by John Legend

I love him; I love his wife; and I love this song. Another mushy, swoon-worthy love song.

We’re Not Gonna Take It by Twisted Sister

Man, this song takes me back. Now when I listen to it, I change the words to “We’re not gonna take it. No! We ain’t Putin’s puppets.” Try it. It always makes me feel better to head bang while shouting this. Also, sustained head banging hurts faster when you’re an old coot.

Seriously, watch the video. It’s hilariously bad but oh so 80s.

Kiss Me Deadly by Lita Ford

Fun fact: I used to think she was singing “Kiss me daddy”, which even as a child, I thought seemed inappropriate. Thankfully, someone pointed out she was actually singing “deadly”, not “daddy”, which made a lot more sense. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Tha Crossroads by Bones Thugs N Harmony

A classic that makes me feel a bit sad when they sing “I don’t wanna die” and how black men still say that 20 years later. But they’ll see you a tha crossroads when you do.

Straight Outta Compton by N.W.A.

Technically, I’m straight outta the LBC but close enough. RIP Eazy-E.

Nice for What by Drake

LOL! Going from the dangerous rap group to ever rock the airwaves to well, the “nice guy” rapper amuses me. Sure, he got owned by Pusha-T (and rightly so) but Drake’s paying tribute to the Queen, Miss Lauryn Hill, here so it gets major love from me.

Doo-Wop (That Thing) by Lauryn Hill (aka The Queen)

She kinda messy in her personal life but the girl can sing. Oh Lordy. Can she sing.

I Like It by Cardi B and Bad Bunny

I can take or leave her, but I gotta give respect to woman who raps, “I like million dollar deals. Where’s my pen? Bitch, I’m signing.” Go on, girl, and get yours.

This is America by Childish Gambino

For many reasons I like this song (and video) but mostly for this, ” Get your money, Black man. Black man, get your money.” I change it to “get your money, Asian woman.” I suggest you change it to whatever fits you and go get your money.

Also, this is the one video you should watch from my list. It’s fantastic. Okay, watch Twisted Sister for the laughs but this for reality.

I’m also listening to lots of old school Madonna, Janet Jackson and TLC. Yup, totally going back to my mid-20s. What songs are you jamming to this summer?

I’m so behind the times on music.
& that I was so excited about Twisted Sister & Lita Ford is a testament to that ๐Ÿ˜‰

LOL! Somedays I feel real in tune with what’s “hot” these days and other days I’m feel like an old coot. ๐Ÿ˜€

I need to listen to some of these still! My mix of music is so random and sometimes I’m just in the mood for swear words and rap or bass beats and pop. No shame! I have a *current favs* playlist on my Spotify that I change out and edit constantly! The song Mine by Bazzi is so. freaking. sexy. and I really love it. It’s not typically a genre that’s in my wheelhouse, though!

I’ll have to check out that Bazzi song. I’ve heard his latest with Camila Cabello and like it but I don’t think I know Mine. Thanks for the recommendation! My mood constantly changes and there is absolutely no rhyme or reason behind it and it makes me laugh going from Britney to NWA. ๐Ÿ˜€
