A Poem: I am Woman

I am Woman

March 8, 2017 by Tanya // 12 Comments

Shoulders curved. Head low. Feet shuffling.

I am woman.

Proud bearing. Strong heart. Keen mind.

I am woman.

Heartbreaker. Life-giver.

I am woman.

Phoenix. Crow. Butterfly. Roach.

I am woman.

Enemy. Seductress. Jailer. Savior.

A prisoner held captive. By you. And me.

I am woman.

Misunderstood. Feared. Crazy. Ambitious.

Put on a pedestal. Knife to my throat.

I am woman.

They told me I was different.

They were right.

I am woman.

I am everything.

Together, We are Stronger then Fear, Hate and Misogyny

A Poem: I am WomanIt saddens more than anything that today, March 8, 2017, that woman are still considered second-class citizens by some. We are not. We are amazing, capable creatures who recognize our power more every day. The myth that strong women — or feminists — hate men is a lie created by those who fear us. Our sheer numbers. Our abilities. Our knowledge. We are a threat to them. There are lots of real problems in this world today with people struggling to survive. Women are part of the answer, not the problem.

Whether or not you choose to participate or abstain from A Day without Woman, I don’t care. What I do care is that you stop giving away your power to others, whether men or women, and recognize your inherent beauty, strength and intelligence. We may not — will not — agree 100% of the time. And that’s okay. I don’t want to be a Stepford wife, nor do I want you to be one either. Let’s instead just choose to be honest, speak our truth while acknowledging others may have a different truth. Most importantly, let’s listen to one another, find common ground and make this beautiful world a safe place for all.

We are women. We are the answer.

I didn’t realize it was International Women’s Day, at the time, but I totally got in an argument with an older woman about how feminism is not a bad word and how it is not the reason why there are so few gentlemen today. It saddens me how many women among us don’t see how we are equal to men. They don’t see how much other women have done for us.

Feminism gets such a bad rap and it’s unfair. It depresses me as well when I see women who don’t appreciate or recognize what women pioneers have done to improve our state of being or feel okay being second-class citizens.
