Honoring Martin Luther King, Jr

Honoring Martin Luther King, Jr

January 18, 2016 by Tanya // 6 Comments

Today we celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. A man who did so much to advance the civil rights movement, and I wonder what Dr. King would think if he was alive today. Would he be surprised that nearly 50 years after his assassination that there was still so much unrest and work to be done? I’m not sure if he would be surprised but probably a bit sad and still 100% committed to seeing equality.

I Have a Dream

I have dream too, Dr. King, that some day people will truly be color blind, just as you dreamt too. They will judge you on your character and actions, not the color of your skin, religious beliefs or sexual orientation. I have dream that some day the lightness will overtake the darkness and fear and hate will not overshadow the humanity and kindness of people. I have a dream that some day I will sing “Free at last!”

And when this happens, and when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual: Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!" Martin Luther King, Jr.

I have a dream that some day your beautiful dream comes true.

I often wonder what our past civil rights leaders would think of the state of things today. I think they’d be both happy and disappointed. We’ve come so far yet still have a long way to go.

I agree, Jana. We’ve definitely made it improvements but there is still work to be done.

Great story Tanya, he was a good man and it is sad for his death. I visited the Lorraine motel in Memphis where he was shot.

    Very historical.

I get shivers just thinking about it. Very historical and sad too.
