Coffee Talk Volume 9: What's Going on with Moi

Coffee Talk: What’s New with Moi, Volume 9

August 19, 2019 by Tanya // 11 Comments

My blogging has once again been somewhat erratic. It’s not intentional but sometimes blogging simply falls to the wayside. Also sometimes I feel like if I did blog I WOULD WRITE EVERYTHING IN CAPS AND BE SCREAMING CONSTANTLY at you, which I do not want to do. You’re welcome.

What’s Going on with Me

Seems a little self-serving and narcissistic but then again, I blog about me, myself and I, so … totally on brand when you think about it.

A Couple of Rants First

Let’s just get these out of the way, then we’ll get to the lighter stuff.

It’s the Guns, Stupid

I am utterly and sincerely at a loss here. Why is this such a hard nut to crack? Oh wait. NRA, money and weak politicians. Got it. So in the meantime, people just keep on dying and we blame everything … video games, mental illness, the sun was out … instead of easy access to guns. As angry as I am at the politicians, I am also angry at the general public, including myself. Politicians serve their constituents but they know after a few days (on average four) we move on and forget. All they need to do is bunker down and withstand the initial onslaught of outrage and rancor. It’s up to us to force change. We, the voters, can solve this problem by electing politicians who support common-sense gun laws.

It’s the Racism, Dummy

I am sick to my stomach that we have an administration and political party who dog whistles to white nationalists. And let’s be real: they ain’t even being subtle about it anymore. It’s full-on blatant now and people are dying because of their hateful (and false) rhetoric. FACT: People are people. Good, bad, awesome or evil comes in every shade, creed and gender. Most importantly, people who stoke division, especially racial division, often use it to divert attention from real issues and problems that somehow benefit them (typically financially), so they focus our attention elsewhere. Be smarter.

Current Rant Mood

Stupid people are like glow sticks. I want to snap them and shake the shit out of them until the light comes on.

What I’m Loving Right Now

Now to the light, fun stuff. The things that help keep me sane.

Shows I’m Watching

I love Pose and Snowfall, both on FX. I was initially hesitant about watching Pose, not because the main characters are transgender, but because I assumed it would be depressing because real life isn’t always very kind to them. Instead, it’s actually an incredibly joyful show … mostly. They don’t shy away from the truth – life is often unfair and unkind – but they don’t give-up and they have such huge hearts. I highly recommend it.

Posters for Pose and Snowfall

Snowfall shows the rise of crack in South Central during the 80s. Sometimes it’s a bit of a slow burn but I love it. The main character Franklin breaks my heart. I either want to hug him and tell him to use his big brain to make something of himself or want the 5-0 to arrest his drug-making ass and shake him for his naiveness. He’s killing his people (crack ain’t ever gonna be legal like weed) and doesn’t even realize it. John Singleton (RIP) created it and he directed Boyz in da Hood, which was a game-changing movie for me.

Books I’m Reading

Coffee Talk: What's Going on with Moi. What I'm eating, reading, watching, ranting about and more. The good news: I am reading. As I’ve whined constantly for the last year, my reading mojo has been low. It is still low but I’ve accepted that as my new normal and am mostly okay with it. Right now I’m trying to clear out some of my NetGalley books and hope to read Jar of Hearts this weekend or soonish. Or before the next link-up. Maybe. I’ve heard great things about it. And if you’re interested in what I read last month: check out my July Bookshelf.

Food I’m Eating

I am supposed to be eating healthy now that it’s August and no longer my birthday month and … hit or miss. My commitment to my get healthy journey isn’t fully 100% yet because I really haven’t sat down and figured out what it looks like. Let’s call that an August goal, shall we? I also plan to share a recipe later this month featuring late summer garden bounty, like zucchini, but then something else caught my eye. Something that doesn’t use any garden bounty but looks delicious. The heart wants what the heart wants, although I’m holding off on making it to see if the heart changes her mind. 😀

Music I’m Rocking

I’m on a HUGE Lizzo kick lately. I like her personality, such a great, honest energy. She always sounds so joyful on her songs.

I am still on my 80s kick too, rocking lots of Prince, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Janet Jackson … the usuals. Okay, maybe a little NKTOB, Tiffany and Debbie Gibson too.

This is Me in a Nutshell

And I bet some of you too.

I am a really please person to be around unless I am hungry, tired, hot, cold, thirsty, anxious, dealing with idiots, wearing a bra or am otherwise uncomfortable.

Your Turn

I told you what’s going on in my word (nothing because I am sincerely the most boring person in the world) so now you tell me what’s going on with you!

Completely on the same page about guns so there is that. I’m still watching Veronica Mars and almost ready for the new season. After that, not sure! I feel like the only person on the planet who considers there birthday only one day. The birthday “month” seems to be more and more popular these days. Not sure I need a whole month to remind me that I’m almost 50. lol!!!

I have never watched Veronica Mars but I know there are diehard fans of the show. LOL! I mainly like celebrating my birthday for a month because I use it as an excuse to eat whatever I want, which I really shouldn’t do. I should revert back to one day celebrations for my waistline. 😀

I love Lizzo, although I’m not sure if she’s really your type of music … more rap/hip-hop.

Oh man. We’re on the same page with guns and racism. The people who can’t see the root of these terrible crimes are protecting some level of privilege. It’s blatant disregard for others for the sake of self preservation. Or it’s just pure hate. As far as this administration goes, I’d say it’s NRA worship and pure hatred for diversity.
Glad you’ve got some shows, books, and music you’re loving right now! I LOVE that song by Lizzo!!

It’s amazing the privilege that some have and how they guard it. That is my favorite Lizzo song. I rock it at least once a day!

That current rant meme is so on point. I just can’t with the guns and the racism. We don’t have cable anymore so don’t have FX. I’ve been binge watching all the food shows on Netflix! Ugly Delicious and the Chef Show. Is it bad that I’ve never heard of Lizzo?!! Looking forward to seeing what you’re cooking!

I’m torn between cutting cable. The only channel I’d really miss is FX and I’m sure I can find it on Hulu or something. Just need to do a little research.

Okay the glowstick thing is funny 🙂

Our country is a mess, that’s for sure. The news is wearing me down, and then I am like, hey what’s going on in other parts of the world, and they are a hot mess as well. *sigh*
