Coffee Talk: What's New with Me, Volume 5

Coffee Talk: What’s New with Me, Volume 5

March 1, 2018 by Tanya // 14 Comments

My brother and his wife were in town last weekend so I ended up taking an unplanned vacation from the blog. But I’m still here! I intended to take pics and such but didn’t because I always forget. It amazes me how good some of you are at documenting everything. Sadly, that is not a skill I apparently have. πŸ˜€ It’s one reason why I haven’t joined Instagram yet. And to be clear, I’m pretty sure when I do, it’s going to be 90% pictures of Max — that’s probably a low estimate too. After all, I am a proud Cat Mom. #NotAshamed

What’s New with Me

Grab a coffee or your beverage of choice while I catch you up on the latest with me.

What I’m Eating

I certainly feasted when my brother and sister-in-law were in town, beginning with Blue Water Seafood Market and Grill in San Diego. It is a small, casual restaurant with a huge wait time. But it is worth it. I also took them out for dim sum at Seafood Cove #2 in Westiminster. Yes, they have two restaurants with very clever names. πŸ˜€ We devoured pork/shrimp shumai, shrimp noodles, BBQ pork buns, calamari, pineapple buns and more.

Dim Sum

I also made them a couple of meals and managed to set the smoke alarm off while doing so but I swear I am a good cook! It’s possible I may have spilled some sugar in my oven while making candied pecan bacon and it smoked terribly. πŸ˜€ On my own, I’m still struggling to eat well. But I keep working at it because I refuse to give up.

What I’m Reading

At this moment, NOTHING. I have no reading goals and purely read for pleasure — generally 4-10 books per month. But I don’t read consistently, more like in bursts. I can go for 2-3 weeks without reading anything new, then devour a book per day. The two books I read earlier this month were so-so and I hope the few books I plan to read prior to the next Show Us Your Books link-up will be more satisfying.

Book Meme

This happens to me more frequently than I care to admit. How about you?

What I’m Watching

Oh yes. Yes, I did go see Black Panther; Yes, the theatre was jam-packed; Yes, I did love it.

via GIPHY

While I don’t expect Crazy Rich Asians and Mulan to rival Black Panther in box office earnings, I do hope everyone shows it the same love and enthusiasm (assuming both movies are excellent) because I am tired of Asians either being whitewashed, needing a white savior or only existing as a non-speaking stereotype.

I am also watching The Alienist. It’s good. A bit slow at times but I’m with it to the (I imagine) bloody end.

What’s Making Me Hulk Out

Oh, the usual. The NRA hold on Republicans. The absolute batshit crazy fact that the NRA is a 501(c)(4) tax-exempt organization, aka a non-profit. Uh, I’ve worked for a non-profit and I have no idea how the NRA could be considered a non-profit organization. It’s happening today but please support #BoycottNRA. Where we choose to spend our hard-earned dollars has the significant impact when it comes to making real change, especially since the NRA only has 5 million members and the USA has about 325 million citizens.

THURSDAY!

We are calling for a one-day boycott of @amazon @appletv @fedex. Pass it on.

Don’t shop.

Don’t stream.

Don’t ship.

As consumers we are demanding these companies sever ties with the @NRA. #march1NRABoycott #BoycottNRA #Enough pic.twitter.com/sQ61m7jnTd

Donald Trump being so stupid that he can’t realize he’s being played by Putin. The GOP twiddling their thumbs while Russia seeds discord through social media and our elections. I pledge allegiance to the United States of America, not Mother Russia.

And while all this stuff makes me rage, I also applaud the Parkland Survivors for their strength and willingness to NOT shut-up. Given how crappy the GOP has been treating them, pretty soon all the gerry-mandering in the world won’t make a difference. To the fact that Texas (aka Ted Cruz) is no longer considered a solid GOP get. We flipped two more seats blue in in New Hampshire and Connecticut. Dick’s Sporting Goods electing to do the right thing on their own and not sell assault rifles to anyone or any guns to anyone under 21. Our leaders may be failing us but the people are not. Bit by bit, we are taking back our country.

What’s Making Me Laugh

Now let’s have some fun because it is so important to nourish your soul and heart in heavy and crazy times. You know animals are my happy place and I spend more time looking at cat and dog memes than I probably should but my soul needs the joy.

cat meme

That expression. Those socks. I need a Max pair of socks.

Cat Meme

This is me. Come to my house and admire my cat. Refuse at your own risk. Note: all the hissing and spitting that will occur if you don’t, will come from me. Max doesn’t care.

Cat Meme

I very much feel great sympathy for all the humans and animals affected by the devastation of Hurricane Harvey. But I also laughed for 15 minutes at this meme because #truth. That cat has no more f*cks to give.

Dog Meme

I can relate to this mini Scooby-Doo because my face has been in the “cookie” jar since Christmas too. Oops.

Dog Meme

Wet dogs smell atrocious but I’d bear it to hang with these happy pups!

A Hero Comes Along … with Books!

Dolly Parton is a living legend and icon. I will also confess to not being a huge fan of her music because country music ain’t my thang. But Dolly is a hero … a book hero.

Today we dedicate the 100 Millionth @DollysLibrary Book to the @librarycongress! I always like to say that 100 million books have led to 100 million stories. #100MillionBooks https://t.co/KxUJp0nP20 pic.twitter.com/LVhYeTCVGp

There is a lot of crap going on right now. But there is also much good happening too, which just have to pay attention and celebrate. What an amazing gift to the world. Thanks Dolly!

Your Turn

So I told you what’s new with me and on my mind, so tell me what’s going on in your world!

While I’m not a huge fan of her music, which always makes me feel guilty, I do adore her as a person. Those socks are truly the best. While I would want Max’s face on mine, I have to laugh and laugh at the expression on that cat’s face. He is not amused. At all. Okay, I won’t feel so bad when my eventual Instagram is all Max. And I would love seeing all those pics of your fur babies!

I really want to see Black Panther. Might use a free movie pass and finally go see it this weekend. I say that now…more than likely I’ll be in yoga pants watching something streaming.

I hope you do see it, Tonya. I really enjoyed it quite a bit. Hehehe. I live for days where I can stay in my yoga pants and sit on my couch. πŸ˜€

I had no idea the NRA was considered a nonprofit. Such bullshit.
I haven’t seen Black Panther because I wanna catch up on Marvel movies in order some day, but I definitely need to read Crazy Rich Asians before the movie because I want to see it!!
Wrote a letter to Amazon today thanks to Steph’s directions on how to do it!
Dolly is amazing. As are those animals memes!!

Yeah, right? I mean seriously how can they be a non-profit? I’m not caught up on Marvel movies either but it really didn’t affect the movie because it’s really self-contained. I haven’t read Crazy Rich Asians either. I feel bad although there are a few months before the movie comes out! Animal memes make my heart happy!

I haven’t had good dim sum in ages and now you are making me want some! Those dishes sound amazing! I love BBQ Pork Buns! We may try and see Black Panther this weekend because my son really wants to go.

It had actually been some time since I’ve had dim sum and it was tasted sooooooo good! I hope you get a chance to take your son to Black Panther. I think he’d really enjoy it. For that matter, so might your daughter!
